US President Donald Trump has agreed to immediately grant a visa to the Ghanaian mother of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, who was shot and killed while walking to school in the Bronx, New York.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the development on Saturday following a telephone conversation with President Trump.

In a post on X, Mamdani said the president had agreed to facilitate the visa to allow the grieving mother to travel to the United States and bid farewell to her son.

“Javits Frimpong’s mother deserves to say goodbye to her son in person,” Mamdani wrote.

The development follows the fatal shooting of the Ghanaian teenager on Thursday morning as he made his way to school in the Bronx.

The case has drawn attention to the plight of the family, particularly the mother’s need to travel to New York following her son’s death.

Mamdani’s intervention and Trump’s reported agreement are expected to help facilitate her travel arrangements so she can attend to funeral and other family matters.

The incident has also renewed concerns about gun violence and the safety of young people in New York City.
