The National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Abanga Yakubu Alhassan, has fired back at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over its ‘Y3gye Y3 Sika’ demonstration, challenging the party to demand the return of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta if it genuinely wants accountability.
Abanga described the NPP’s demands as misplaced, arguing that the party should direct its attention towards Ofori-Atta rather than targeting the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa.
In a statement issued om November 4, 2026, he praised Ablakwa for what he described as his meticulous leadership and positive contributions to Ghana’s international relations.
“The NPP’s “Y3gye y3 sika” demands are completely misplaced. Instead of targeting the venerable Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, a meticulous leader whose disciplined work has brought immense positive impact to Ghana’s international relations, they should look closer to home,” he stated.
Abanga argued that Ofori-Atta should be the focus of the NPP’s accountability demands, citing his handling of the country’s economy during his tenure as Finance Minister.
He accused the former minister of imposing painful haircuts on citizens through Ghana’s debt restructuring programme and contributing to the country’s economic challenges, including its loss of investment-grade credit status.
“The real focus should be on former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, who forced painful haircuts on citizens, and landed Ghana in junk status,” he added.
The NDC National Vice Chairman further challenged the NPP to demand that Ofori-Atta return to Ghana to account for his stewardship.
“If the NPP wants accountability, they should demand that Ofori-Atta muster the courage to return to Ghana and account for his stewardship,” he said.
The ‘Y3gye Y3 Sika’ demonstration is being organised by elements within the NPP to demand accountability over issues surrounding the management of public funds in the evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa.
