The government has announced progress towards establishing a new national airline, following preliminary studies that have reportedly confirmed the viability of the proposed carrier.

According to the government, a roadmap for the establishment of the national airline has been agreed upon, outlining key steps required to make the project operational.

The process will involve identifying a strategic airline partner and a technical partner, obtaining an Air Operator Certificate (AOC), selecting an appropriate aircraft fleet and securing the necessary financing arrangements.

The latest development follows a meeting between President John Dramani Mahama and officials of the Boeing Group on Monday, during which discussions focused on the company’s support for Ghana’s efforts to re-establish a national airline.

The Boeing delegation reportedly assured the President of its continued assistance throughout the establishment and operational phases of the proposed airline.

Ghana National Airline Project Gets Boeing Support

The involvement of Boeing is expected to provide technical support as Ghana works towards setting up a new national carrier.

The proposed airline forms part of the government’s broader ambition to strengthen Ghana’s aviation industry, improve international air connectivity and maximise the country’s investment in airport infrastructure.

The government believes the establishment of a national airline could help increase the use of Ghana’s improved airport facilities while positioning Accra as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.

New National Airline Expected to Create Jobs

Beyond improving air connectivity, the proposed Ghana national airline is expected to create employment opportunities across several sectors of the aviation industry.

Potential beneficiaries include pilots, cabin crew members, aeronautical engineers, aircraft maintenance professionals and aviation management specialists.

The project is also expected to contribute to the development of Ghana’s aviation ecosystem through partnerships, technical expertise and investment.

Roadmap for Ghana’s New National Carrier

With preliminary feasibility studies reportedly affirming the project’s viability, attention is now expected to turn to securing strategic partnerships, obtaining regulatory approval, choosing aircraft and putting financing arrangements in place.

However, the proposed airline will need to complete the necessary regulatory, operational and financial requirements before commencing commercial flights.

The government’s latest engagement with Boeing marks another development in its efforts to re-establish a national carrier and strengthen Ghana’s position in the regional aviation industry.
