Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the Mahama government of using State power to intimidate and silence opposition lawmakers, vowing that the Minority will continue to hold the government accountable.
Addressing the media on Wednesday, November 4, Mr Afenyo-Markin described the alleged arrests, detention and harassment of some Minority MPs as a coordinated attempt to weaken the opposition.
“We see in this pattern a coordinated autocratic abuse of power intended to exhaust our resolve and silence our voices,” he said.
His comments followed the removal of Damongo MP Samuel Abu Jinapor from Parliament on Tuesday after he refused to withdraw an allegation that Ghanaian diplomatic passports were being sold for GH¢50,000.
Mr Afenyo-Markin stressed that the Minority supports lawful accountability but would resist any attempt to use State institutions to compel political submission.
“What we resist and will never desist from resisting is a conversion of State power into an instrument of political submission,” he said.
He reaffirmed the caucus’s determination to continue scrutinising government actions, declaring: “We shall not be moved. We shall not be cowed. And we surely shall not be silenced.”
