President John Dramani Mahama has credited the previous Akufo-Addo administration with initiating Ghana’s move to become a partner country of the BRICS bloc.

Speaking at a meet-the-press session at Jubilee House on Thursday, November 5, 2026, Mr Mahama said a ministerial committee established under the former NPP government recommended the partnership before his administration took office.

“Let me also tell you, the ministerial committee that sat and recommended that Ghana should accede to BRICS partnership was under Nana Akufo-Addo,” he said.

He explained that his government reviewed the proposal and subsequently secured Cabinet approval.

“We came and met their recommendation. And so, we didn’t set up the ministerial committee. It was set up under the former NPP administration,” he added.

Mr Mahama said Ghana’s decision to join the BRICS partnership aligns with its longstanding non-aligned foreign policy and does not represent a departure from the country’s diplomatic principles.
