The Russian University of Transport has conferred an honorary doctorate degree on President John Dramani Mahama, making him the first sitting Head of State to receive the distinction from the institution.

The honour recognised President Mahama’s significant contributions to Ghana’s national development, particularly his investments in transport infrastructure, education, and professional training.

Reading the citation during the ceremony in Moscow, the university’s Academic Council commended his leadership and noted that his national policies exemplify the institution’s core principle of placing knowledge at the service of society.

Accepting the conferment, President Mahama highlighted transport infrastructure as an indispensable catalyst for economic growth, explaining that reliable networks connect citizens to opportunities and empower farmers, students, and businesses by moving goods efficiently to markets and ports.

President Mahama outlined Ghana’s major ongoing transport interventions, including the expansion of ports and airports, the reconstruction of primary roads, the development of the railway network, and efforts to revive the national airline before the end of his tenure.

To sustain these initiatives, he stressed the critical need for skilled local engineers and transport specialists. The President called for deepened bilateral cooperation between the Russian University of Transport and Ghanaian technical institutions in areas such as railway engineering, logistics, road safety, and traffic technology.

Mahama expressed gratitude to the university and dedicated the doctorate to the people of Ghana, expressing hope that the milestone would further strengthen the longstanding friendship between Ghana and Russia.
