Bechem United president Kingsley Owusu Achau has welcomed the prospect of former Ghana captain Andre Ayew contesting the Ghana Football Association (GFA) presidency next year.
Ayew, who is currently the chief executive officer of Nania FC, has been linked with a possible bid to lead Ghana football, although he is yet to officially declare his intention to contest the position.
The former Olympique Marseille and West Ham United forward has reportedly received support from several football personalities, with Owusu Achau expressing confidence in his ability to take up the role.
According to the Bechem United president, Ayew’s maturity and extensive experience in both Ghanaian and international football make him a credible candidate for the top job.
“Well, I believe Dede Ayew is mature, and he has seen it all in Ghana football and world football at large.
“So if he says he wants to be GFA president, it is refreshing. It’s okay because he knows he is capable of doing it,” Owusu Achau said.
Ayew, a member of Ghana’s squad that won the 2009 FIFA Under-20 World Cup, enjoyed a lengthy international career with the Black Stars and has played for several clubs across Europe.
His potential entry into the GFA presidential race could add to the competition for the position ahead of next year’s elections.
Several other football administrators have also been linked with a possible contest, including Samuel Annim Addo, former Brong Ahafo Regional Football Association chairman Ralph Gyambrah, Karela United chief executive Elloeny Amande and former GFA vice-president George Afriyie.
The GFA presidential election is expected to attract significant attention as contenders position themselves for the leadership of Ghana football.
