The Member of Parliament for Walewale, Hajia Zuweira Abudu has withdrawn from New Patriotic Party primaries in her constituency.

Hajia Zuweira Abudu was re-contesting her seat but has decided to quit following two inconclusive elections; one in January and the other held on Monday, September 9 after a court order that overruled the earlier primary which saw her emerge loser.

She lost the January election by 7 votes less as her competitor, Dr. Kabiru Tia Mahama was adjudged winner.

The incumbent MP challenged the results in court alleging widespread irregularities including fraud, impersonation and wrongful declaration.

A High Court annulled the election results and a rerun was held yesterday but it ended chaotically when an agent allegedly disrupted the process and resulted in attacks which were resolved by the Police.

Under the circumstances, the Electoral Commission cancelled the election again but Hajia Lariba has, for the sake of peace, withdrawn from the race.

"Following the inconclusive re-run of the parliamentary primary in the Walewale constituency yesterday (with the Electoral Commission unable to declare a result as a result of an unfortunate incident), I have decided that in the interest of the greater good of the new patriotic party and peace and unity in the Walewale constituency, I will no longer be a candidate for MP in the 2024 elections.

"I am therefore formally withdrawing from the contest," she said in letter addressed to the General Secretary of the NPP. I would like to thank the party for the honour done me in representing my constituency over the last four years and can assure the party of my continued support in the 2024 election campaign", she issued a statement.

Following the impasse, the NPP National Executive Committee has scheduled an emergency meeting tomorrow as it runs against time to have a parliamentary candidate for the Walewale Constituency ahead of Friday's deadline for filling nominations at the Electoral Commission.
