President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s two-term presidential limit, insisting that he will not appear on the ballot in 2028.
In a statement from the Presidency, he said his absence from the race would strengthen his resolve to enforce fiscal discipline and break the cycle of election-year overspending that has historically triggered economic crises.
Speaking during a three-day state visit to Singapore, where he held bilateral talks with Singaporean President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Mr Mahama condemned the tendency of incumbent governments to bypass fiscal safeguards to win voter support.
“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline,” the President assured.
He pointed to key economic gains under his administration since his return to power after a decisive 2024 election victory, noting a rapid decline in inflation and interest rates, alongside a marked appreciation of the cedi.
Mr Mahama’s comments come in response to persistent claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) that he intends to seek a third term beyond his current and final mandate.
The discussions in Singapore centred on deepening economic cooperation and attracting investment between the two nations.
