The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to delivering on its promise to construct new sports stadia for Ghana’s newly created regions.
This assurance comes after President John Dramani Mahama announced, during his Thank You Tour in the Western Region, that his administration will build six modern stadia for the new administrative areas.
Speaking to Citi Sports, Mr. Ampofo Ankrah lauded President Mahama’s leadership, expressing the Authority’s full backing for the initiative.
"His Excellency the President is committed to ensuring that we have the best infrastructure in Ghana under his second tenure, and he’s already hit the ground running," Ampofo Ankrah told Citi Sports.
"We’re very inspired by his leadership. It’s one of the reasons we’re also determined to make a mark."
Ampofo Ankrah underscored the need for equitable infrastructure development, noting that the new regions — often referred to as “orphan regions” — have historically felt sidelined in national development.
"These regions have called themselves the orphan regions for a reason. They believe they’ve not had a fair share of the national cake, and during the campaign, His Excellency listened to those cries."
Beyond the construction of new facilities, the NSA Director General highlighted plans to refurbish and upgrade existing sports infrastructure nationwide.
"There is a plan for existing facilities; whether it’s re-engineering, expansion, or complete overhaul.
"As for the new ones, we will use proven templates and management systems from larger venues to ensure they’re properly run. These regions will no longer feel left out
“The 6 new regions deserve better when it comes to building a sports facility for them, there’s also a plan for existing facilities to be looked at," he added.
The six regions earmarked for the stadia projects include Western North, Oti, North East, Bono East, Savannah, and Ahafo. These regions were established in 2019 as part of efforts to promote decentralisation and balanced national development.
