The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has begun the enforcement of the newly enacted Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024, as part of efforts to bring greater transparency and regulation to the country’s shipping sector.

Under the new law, all shipping service providers are now required to submit their proposed charges to the Authority for review and approval before implementation.

The move aims to curb arbitrary pricing and protect importers, exporters, and other industry stakeholders from excessive charges.

Speaking on the enforcement measures, officials from the GSA emphasized that the law is designed to ensure fairness and accountability in the maritime transport space.

“The industry needs proper checks and balances, and this Act provides a legal framework to achieve that,” a spokesperson said.

In response to rising concerns about the impact of volatile foreign exchange rates on shipping costs, the GSA revealed it is collaborating with the Bank of Ghana to explore solutions.

This partnership is expected to bring stability to currency conversion issues that frequently affect freight and logistics operators.

Additionally, the Authority has begun engaging with other transport regulators to fully operationalize the provisions of the law, ensuring a harmonized and coordinated regulatory environment across the broader transportation sector.

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority says it remains committed to stakeholder dialogue and will continue to engage players in the shipping industry to ensure a smooth transition under the new regulatory regime.
