Construction of the multipurpose Hajj Village at Kotoka International Airport is progressing steadily following the sod-cutting ceremony led by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, February 28, 2025.
The project, spearheaded by the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL), is a strategic initiative aimed at enhancing pilgrimage operations while generating non-aeronautical revenue for the company.
As a state-owned, self-sustaining commercial entity, GACL relies on internal revenue generation through commercial partnerships to fund its operations, facilitating the movement of aircraft, passengers, cargo, and mail.
Delivering the keynote address, President Mahama reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to honoring promises made to the Muslim community.
He emphasized that the New Hajj Village would ensure better coordination and improved comfort for pilgrims, aligning with the government’s broader goal of religious inclusivity and supporting Ghana’s diverse faith communities.
The New Hajj Village, strategically located near Kotoka International Airport, is designed as a world-class, mixed-use facility to serve both Hajj pilgrims and the general public year-round. The development will feature key amenities, including: residential accommodations; a clinic; a dedicated terminal for Hajj operations; conference spaces; and recreational areas and offices.
Beyond its role in facilitating Hajj operations, the commercial facilities—such as residential accommodations, conference centers, and sports complexes—will remain operational during non-Hajj periods, ensuring a sustainable revenue stream for GACL.
The project is being developed by Mawums Limited, a Ghanaian civil engineering and real estate firm, in collaboration with GACL. It is expected to be completed within 24 months.
The sod-cutting event was graced by several distinguished personalities, including, His Eminence Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, National Chief Imam, Islamic scholars, government officials and representatives from the Hajj Task Force and various Muslim groups.
Upon completion, the New Hajj Village will offer pilgrims and the broader community a dignified, comfortable, and modern experience, reinforcing Ghana’s commitment to religious inclusivity and infrastructure development.
