President John Dramani Mahama has ordered an immediate investigation into the deaths of seven illegal miners following a violent clash with soldiers on duty at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Obuasi.

A statement from the presidency said, “The Government has meanwhile asked the management of Anglo-Gold AshanK to bear the medical expenses of the injured individuals fully and to facilitate the burial arrangements for those who have lost their lives.”

Seven illegal miners were killed and one injured in a clash with soldiers at the AngloGold Ashanti Mines in Obuasi.

The miners, armed with various weapons, attacked the soldiers, who responded in self-defence.

The Ghana Armed Forces urge illegal miners to stay away from mining concessions to prevent further loss of life.
