President John Dramani Mahama, through the Secretary to the Presidency, Dr. Callistus Mahama, has issued a directive for the immediate recall of all diplomatic Passports that were issued under the erstwhile Akufo Addo/Bawumia regime.
The directive issued on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, was addressed to the Chief Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
According to President John Dramani Mahama, the directive is part of the government's efforts to streamline the issuance of official travel documents and ensure their proper use in line with national and international standards. It also safeguards the integrity of Ghana’s diplomatic engagements by preventing the misuse of these high-level passports.
All holders of Diplomatic and Service Passports issued by the previous government are expected to return their documents by January 24, 2025.
Diplomatic and Service Passports are typically reserved for government officials, diplomats, and certain high-ranking citizens who may be representing the country on official business.
Their misuse, therefore, can put the country in a significant security and reputational threat.
A thorough verification process, following directives from the Presidency, will be undertaken to ensure that the returned passports meet the current eligibility criteria for issuance.
