The remains of Ghanaian international footballer Christian Atsu will arrive in Accra on Sunday (19 February) evening after he was discovered dead in the rubble in Turkey following a devastating earthquake.

Atsu, 31, was caught up in a 7.8-magnitude quake that rocked Turkey and Syria, killing more than 45,000 people in both countries.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration on Sunday morning said the government was making arrangements to receive the remains of the late Atsu at the Kotoka International Airport.

Atsu’s family, officials of the Ghana Football Association, and government officials will be at the Kotoka International Airport to receive the remains.

“The remains will be accompanied by his family and Ghana’s ambassador to Türkiye on a Turkish airlines flight and will arrive in Accra at 7:40 p.m. today Sunday, 19 February 2023,” the statement said.

“The remains will be received at the Kotoka International Airport by the family, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and the Government upon its arrival from Istanbul, Türkiye.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family, and we pray for the eternal repose of the soul of Christian Atsu.”
