Personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces successfully thwarted an attempted takeover of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) headquarters on Tuesday, December 10, averting what could have been a major disruption to the operations of one of Ghana’s key economic institutions.

The incident, captured on video and circulated on social media, shows a crowd of unidentified individuals attempting to breach the gates of the GPHA headquarters.
The swift response of military personnel, who were stationed at the site, prevented the intruders from gaining access and restored order to the premises.
The attempted takeover began early in the day when a group of unidentified men converged at the entrance of the GPHA headquarters.
Witnesses reported that the crowd, numbering in the dozens, displayed aggressive behaviour and attempted to force their way onto the premises.
Military personnel stationed at the facility quickly intervened, forming a barrier and pushing back the crowd. Footage from the scene shows tense moments as the military confronted the group, using measured force to prevent them from breaching the gates.
The situation was eventually brought under control without any reports of injuries or significant property damage.
However, the incident raised concerns about the increasing wave of attempted takeovers targeting government institutions across the country.
The attempted takeover of the GPHA headquarters is one of several similar incidents reported nationwide since the declaration of John Dramani Mahama as president-elect.
Other government institutions, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the Forestry Commission, and Metro Mass Transit, have also been targeted by groups seeking to take control of these facilities.
