A group of aggrieved youths of Bangui who identify as the Movement of Young Pan-Africans (MJP) organized a protest on Saturday, July 20, 2024 to voice out their aggrievances against the activities of an American non-governmental organization in the Central African Republic (CAR).

The protest briefly follows the arrest of Martin Joseph Figueira, an affiliate of the American NGO, “FHI-360”.

According to a publication in the Associated Press, Figueira was arrested by authorities of CAR for allegedly being in touch with armed groups to plot a coup.

Speaking on behalf of the group, Socrate Gutenberg Taramboye, the leader of the MJP mentioned that the protest was against attempts by the NGO to launch a ‘justice access’ policy. An initiative the group believes contravenes the constitution of the Central African Republic and may infringe on the human rights of citizens.

The group accused the NGO of trying to assimilate cultures like LGBTQ into the People of the Central African Republic.

Socrate Gutenberg charged the CAR government to ensure that the rules of law are allied in the case of Figueira.

He believes there’s sufficient evidence of communications between him and rebel groups to ensure he is prosecuted and justice is served.
