The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) John Dramani Mahama says his government if voted for to be president will investigate the controversial construction of the National Cathedral.

According to him, individuals who have enriched themselves through the failed project will face the law under his administration.

Suggesting the project was laudable, Mr Mahama noted that he would decide whether to ‘cover, complete or convert’ the foundation hole of the National Cathedral after an investigation of corruption associated with the project is done.

“I am a Christian and I belong to the Assemblies of God church. Building a house of God is something we all do. I contributed money to my local Assembly of God branch to build our church for the praise and worship of our God.”

“But I don't condone stealing in the name of God. That is what has happened in the case of the National Cathedral. It is instructive that members of the board of trustees have resigned and they have called for a forensic audit of the National Cathedral.”

“I am not saying it, members of the board believe that fraud has been perpetuated against the people of Ghana and they are calling for a forensic audit.” Mr Mahama said while addressing the media as part of his campaign in Accra, on July 7, 2024.

He added: “At the time this National Cathedral came up, it was someone's commitment to God and we were assured that public funds would not be used but unfortunately we hear three hundred and some million has gone into it.”

“Where do these payments go, were they justified? Who did it go to? These are all things that we have to unravel. I think that that is the first thing we will do before we even decide what to do with that huge pit. So first let's investigate and do a forensic audit. If people have illegally taken money from the people of Ghana, they must be made to refund that money.”
