The son of the Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East cum Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has been reportedly stabbed.

The incident is said to have happened following confusion near the Electoral Commission office at Kasoa, myjoyonline.com reports.

Ato Koomson, the son of the MP, was rushed to the 37 Military Hospital after he was stabbed and is said to be in critical condition.

The report added that its sources indicated that another person was also injured during the altercation.

An eyewitness, who shared details about what happened, said that the confusion started when supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) and opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) “disagreed on the position of some residents in the queue in the ongoing voter ID cards transfer and replacement exercise.”

According to the source, the practice has been that some persons in either party would book positions for people in queues by placing chairs in them, but in one instance, there was a disagreement on who would sit on a particular chair.

The situation escalated, the source said, with Ato Koomson arriving some 45 minutes after the disagreements, and is said to have approached the NDC organizer at the registration centre to help resolve the issue.

But another member of the NDC rather started verbally abusing the MP's son, the source added.

In the ensuing fracas, the alleged NDC member pulled out a knife and stabbed Koomson in the chest, a member of the NPP who also sustained a minor cut, King Adawu, also shared.

On how he also got cut, King Adawu is reported to have said he was trying to block the knife, resulting in his injury.

Although he was rushed together to the hospital with Ato Koomson, the latter has remained on admission, while Adawu has been discharged, the report stated.

In the meantime, the report said the police have arrested the main suspect in the matter as it investigates the matter further.
