Ghana suffered their first competitive defeat under Chris Hughton as Comoros stunned them at the Moroni Sports Stadium on Tuesday evening in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

The Coelacanths secured a 1-0 victory thanks to Myziane Maolida's 43rd-minute strike. The Hertha BSC midfielder ran rings around four markers and curled the ball into the far corner beating Richard Ofori.

The Black Stars with several attempts failed to restore parity as the hosts remained resilient throughout the game.

Prior to conceding the goal Antoine Semenyo missed a big chance as well as Jordan Ayew who failed to connect a fine cross from Inakli Williams.

Hughton attempted to turn the game in Ghana's favour by introducing the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Ernest Nuamah, Fatatwu Issahaku, Majeed Ashimeru and Jonathan Sowah but all their efforts to at least win a point proved futile with several chances going wide in the game.

This is the first competitive defeat recorded under Chris Hughton in a game that many Ghanaians expected a win to avenge their woeful show in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations where the same opponents stunned them 3-2 in their final group game.

The result has propelled Comoros to the top of the table with six points having won their first game against the Central African Republic while Mali followed with four points. Ghana have three points courtesy of the win in their first match against Madagascar which ended ina  1-0 victory at the Baba Yara Stadium
