The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, on Tuesday, announced a-seven member committee to inquire into the “IGP leaked tape” which bothers on conspiracy to remove the head of Ghana Police Service for failing to collude with some members of the ruling party to, among others, subvert Ghana’s democracy.
The committee comprises three members from each from both sides of Parliament and one technical person.
Announcing his formation of the committee to establish the veracity or otherwise of the claims contained in the leaked tape, Mr Bagbin said while the Minority Caucus has furnished him with the names of three Members from their side, the Majority side has yet to submit their list of three memebrs for the inquiry to begin.
The Speaker said the issues raised in the leaked tape have implications for the security of the country as well as the democratic dispensation, adding that the inquiry will establish the veracity or otherwise of the claims.
For his part, the Deputy Minority Leader, Mr Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah, thanked the Speaker for forming the committee to look into the leaked tape issues and urged the Majority Caucus to submit the names of the three Members from their side for the committee to immediately commence work.
The Majority Chief Whip, Mr Frank Annoh-Dompreh, said his side has no option but to comply with the Speaker’s directive.
On Wednesday, 12th July, the Minority Caucus called for a full-scale parliamentary inquiry into a leaked tape in which some alleged senior members of the ruling party and a top police officer are heard conspiring to remove the Inspector General of Police in order to rig election 2024 for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The Deputy Minority Leader’s call was strongly supported by the Ranking Member on Defence and Interior, Mr James Agalga, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South Mr Haruna Iddrisu as well as the Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, Mr Eric Opoku.
