The New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Alan Kyerematen has donated GHC100,000 to traders whose goods were burnt at the Kejetia market complex.

Kyerematen announced the donation when he visited the facility on Friday 24 March. The fire ravaged portions of the market on Wednesday 15 March, destroying shops, goods and cash worth millions.

The market was shut down for a 72-hour assessment and investigation. It was reopened to business following a visit by vice president Bawumia to assess the situation at the market.

The former minister of trades and industry, Kyerematen, met with the victims to convey his sympathy and pledge support for the traders to assuage their loss.

He said “I sympathize with all of you in this unfortunate moment. As traders, your concerns affect all Ghanaians. We are, however, grateful that no lives were lost.” He promised to engage the government to ensure the implementation of the measures in its committee’s report on the fire outbreak.

Kyeramaten made an appeal for the expedited completion of phase two of the Kejetia market which has been suspended because of the country’s ongoing domestic debt exchange programme.

He said “if phase two of this market is not completed, it will be a big inconvenience to all traders. I, therefore, implore the government to speed up efforts to enable the contractor to come back to work on the project as soon as possible.” He urged the traders to respect fire safety protocols to avoid the recurrence of similar disasters in future.

A representative of the market queen, Nana Sakina, expressed appreciation for the gesture of the NPP flagbearer hopeful when she received the cash on behalf of the victims. She prayed for God’s blessings for Kyerematen.

She said “you’ve shown that you are caring and considerate and for you to cut short your nationwide tour to visit us in our time of need shows you are a good man. We pray God’s favour for you as you seek to lead the NPP and Ghana.”
